This Blog post almost didn’t happen. Due to all the Christmas preparations going on and a short visit from my youngest brother, I almost forgot to write it. When I did remember, there was a lot of resistance from my brain.
” I don’t want to do that.”
“I don’t know what to write.”
“It’s late, there isn’t time.”
I listened to those thoughts and went to bed.
But all night I thought about a gift that my Life Coach sent me for Christmas; it was a mug with a packet of hot cocoa. The mug has a message on it…
Do It Anyway.
It is a simple message, but those three words are the key to moving us forward.
Many times each day my brain offers me some version of “I don’t want to.” There’s nothing wrong. It’s just doing it’s job; conserving energy.
We can override the “I don’t want to”, from our lower brain with, “Do It Anyway” from our higher brain.
I could write a thousand scenarios that our brains might rebel against. Some may actually be challenging, others may be basic. Maybe it’s getting out of bed. Exercising. Preparing for a meeting. Calling Mom and Dad. Finishing a project. Making that Dr.’s appointment. Updating your resume. etc. etc. etc.
If you pay close attention you’ll notice that the hardest part isn’t going from 0-100 percent finished. The hardest part is going from 0-1. If your project requires several steps over several days or months, taking that first step from inaction to action at each step may be the hardest. But as you practice doing it anyway, you’ll be teaching your brain that it isn’t so hard. You’ll be gaining evidence that you will survive this expulsion of energy.
But to get to that point you have to have a thought that will create an emotion that will drive you forward.
For me, Do It Anyway, is that thought.
It creates a feeling of commitment inside of me.
And when I feel committed, I take action.
That’s why you’re reading this Blog post right now. Because I listened to Do It Anyway instead of I Don’t Want to Do That.
Isn’t it magical? Give it a try.
And have a Merry Christmas. Even if it seems hard or impossible. Do It Anyway.
