Thoughts That Motivate You

I found a dead mouse in my office!

Last week, just minutes before beginning a coaching session with a client, I moved some poster board from under my desk and found a dead mouse. It didn't look too "old", but had probably been there for a few days.

We have a couple of cats, and they like to bring us presents.

Thoughts That Motivate You, I found a dead mouse in my office.

I jumped and my body tensed when I discovered it. My first thought was, "I'll ask Paul to take care of it when he gets home", because I certainly didn't want to deal with it.

But when I sat down to log into Zoom for the coaching session, I could see it from my desk chair and it was distracting.

I had new thoughts... "I can take care of this, I don't want to be distracted while coaching."

Suddenly I had the courage to dispose of it; with a paper towel in one hand and a small garbage can in the other, I pushed the mouse into the container and ran upstairs to throw it into our outside canister.

Then I started the coaching session - on time!

It got me thinking about the power of our thoughts.

For a few days, I had been in my office going about my business, literally, and that mouse had been there the whole time.

But as soon as I became aware of the mouse, I couldn't stand the idea of being in the same room with it.

The only thing that had changed was my knowledge of it.

Then I had thoughts about it (Gross, a dead mouse!), that lead to feelings (Disgusting!), which lead to action (get it out of here!), which gave me the result I wanted: No dead mouse in my office. And I felt more courageous to boot.

Small things bring about big results. That's why it's so important to pay attention to what you are thinking; because every Thought you have, and attach to, is creating something for you.

It wasn't the dead mouse that created my Thoughts - because it had been dead for days and hadn't affected me at all.

It was my Thoughts after discovering the poor little guy that quickly created a domino effect.

Don't fall for the lies that your brain tells you in an effort to keep you safe. In the long run, those "safe" thoughts will make you miserable.

Things like:

It doesn't matter

I wasn't made for this

I never learned how

Nobody understands me

I should know that by now

If only....

I'll feel good enough when...

I'll do it later

And any other thought that makes you believe you are less than you really are.

They seem small and simple - But they are LIES. And they create HUGE miserable results.

Notice them.

Disregard immediately when you recognize them as lies.

Turn toward them for meaning if needed, but don't attach to them.

Thank them for trying to protect you,

Reassure yourself that you are an adult that can figure out hard things.

Remind yourself of your goodness and

Recommit to what you want to achieve.

THIS is the work I do as a Life Coach. It is beautiful and it is hard.

And you are capable of it.

Xo,

Meredith
